Westworld Season 3 Episode 1 Review

Westworld Season 3 Episode 1 has finally arrived and brings with some baggage that will set the tone for the whole upcoming season. The concept of the episode feels slightly different than what we have been come to know so far in the series with the entire episode taking place outside of the park itself. So what do we have to look forward to with this new season?
The episode opens up with an investor of a data company very angry with the price of the Delos in freefall after the massacre of some park customers as well as board members.
We get an idea of some of the future technologies that are utilized in the current setting. One of the most notable and recurring ones was a medication that appeared like a microchip in the form of a wafer that the user places on their tongue. This item is never clearly stated as to what it does, but we can assume that it’s a form of medication used for sleep or anxiety.
We also see Dolores take over this mansion and steal this mans money as well as some confidential information for a data company.
The overall theme to this episode appears to be with the collection of data and use of technology. It shows how it impacts others in the world both in a good way as well as a negative one.
We are introduced to Caleb. A man that is struggling with the passing of one of his friends as well as trying to get ahead in the modern world that he lives in. He is not a fan of the use of all the technology around him.
Caleb even though he has a day job, has to use a black market app that that functions like the upwork app we see today. He does small jobs and gets paid to carry them out so he can afford to help keep his mother in the hospital.
Caleb is looking for something real in life, so it becomes ironic that towards the end of the episode, he comes face to face with a very injured Dolores, how appears to be injured in the same place as his friend was who died from a gunshot.
I will be curious to see what will become of this newfound relationship.
In another part of the world, Bernard is on the run. He is trying to stop Dolores and does not want to cause issues. His small part in this episode covers him escaping the bounty on his head and in the end, making the decision to return to Westworld to look for a way to stop Dolores.
The premise of the season is very interesting and I think will much more cover the concept of data controlling what we do, showing that things seem to be predetermined, and in this way, we are all just like characters moving around in a big park.
When Dolores’s boyfriend is at a social gathering with the rest of the people of the company Incite. One of his friends makes a joke that we are all in a simulation. This is a theory that exists today, but I think that the side comment that was made here will have much more significance as the season progresses and possibly be the big twist at the end. Only time will tell.
But with that being said, its fantastic to have Westworld back. To get a show that works hard to make you think again. The quality has not slipped, and I am very interested to see more of the futuristic world that has been laid out before us. There is still the violence and deeper feeling to most scenes that we have come to expect in the past.
