Iron Man Review
/In the early days before the Marvel Cinematic Universe exploded out with heroes and characters there was Iron Man. In 2008 marvel Studios brought us Iron Man a movie that to this day feels a little different from the other marvel movies in the universe. Here is our review of Iron Man.
The Setting of Iron Man
Iron Man currently is the 3rd movie in the Marvel Cinematic timeline of films and follows the character Tony Stark played by Robert Downey Jr., the son of the late Howard Stark. The same Howard Stark that appears in the Captain America the First Avenger.
Tony Stark is the CEO of Stark Industries, a technology and weapons manufacturer, but after being taken hostage to create new weapons by a band of terrorists, Tony Stark learns that what he has created puts the world in greater danger than he could have ever imagined.
This film is about Tony Stark and his creation of Iron Man and how he grapples with the responsibility of he and his family’s creation of weapons and attempt to save the world from it getting into the wrong hands.
What Sets Iron Man Apart From Other Marvel Movies?
There is a nice balance of comedy and seriousness that are spread throughout this movie. The millionaire persona of Tony Stark carries the film. I also tend to be a fan of watching something get built from nothing as well which this movie accomplishes several times.
There are several scenes that are all about testing and even failing while trying to perfect the Iron Man suit that are really enjoyable. It also tends to be the theme for this film and other films in the future.
This movie also feels like the last movie in the timeline that has a relatively realistic form view of technology as things after this film begin to trend to the realm of science fiction. I’s because of that, that Iron Man feels much more grounded to reality compared to the later more comic like themes and powers we see in the series.
The Characters In Iron Man
Robert Downey Jr. masterfully plays Tony Stark who easily is one of the most characterized heroes in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It was also very cool to see Jeff Bridges play Obadiah Stain. He plays a much more serious character than one that we are used to seeing him playing from some of his most notable roles like The Big Lebowski or the Tron movies.
Terrance Howard is also in this movie who plays Rhodey, better known as War machine in the later films, he plays the more strict no nonsense military man in this film. Though there are other appearances in later films of this character, he was re-casted for later films.
And of course there is Gwyneth Paltrow who plays Pepper Potts. She acts early in the movie as Tony’s trusted assistant and has to put up with all of Tony’s antics. The character relationship between Miss Potts and Tony Stark is fun to watch.
Overall the cast feels cohesive with no one actor really dropping the ball making Iron Man a really good watch.
Should you Watch Iron Man?
Do I need to watch Iron Man for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Yes. This movie is in my opinion the true start to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the previous film in the timeline Captain Marvel is also a good movie and a must watch, Tony Stark has substantially more to over the series as a whole.
Captain America comes first in the series but could honestly be passed up in my option for Captain Marvel and Iron Man.
I also feel that this movie is a must watch if you are watching marvel films because it’s just a good time. It feels more like the classic super hero movies before they really exploded onto the scene.
This movie is easily one of the best films from the original phase one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
