The Throne of Eldraine set features a new style of cards. Adventurer cards are creature cards, but each has a set of alternative characteristics in a subset frame on the left of its text box. You may cast the card as its Adventure—if you do, you can cast it as a creature later.

Adamant

Another new mechanic is called Adamant. According to Wizards of the Coast:

New to the Throne of Eldraine set, the adamant ability word indicates a reward for showing exceptional dedication to a color and spending three or more mana of that color to cast a spell. An ability word appears in italics and has no rules meaning.

Food Tokens

Interesting, so what are food tokens and what do they do? Essentially these food tokens are used to trigger creature and spell cards abilities. For instants Tempting witch allows you to sacrifice after paying the manna cost to either deal 3 life or gain 3 life. An interesting mechanic to say the least.

There are many other creatures that will call for food creation of use in this set. But they cannot be used to pay multiple mana costs.

I think that I will need to play with this mechanic myself before I know exactly how I feel about it. It’s very unique and different. What are your thoughts on this new mechanic? Be sure to comment below and let us know!

Drawing Your Second Card

Another set theme is drawing your second card. If you draw your second card in a turn this ability triggers and does unique things based on the cards ability that fires for instance. If I drew a second card and this ability was activated it might allow me to put a +1/+1 counter on my creature.

One thing that really stands out to me with this set is the art. If there was ever a set that I wanted to collect just for the art in it, this would be the one. All the cards really fit the fantasy theme that the set has going for it. The two notable planeswalkers in this set are Oko, thief of Crowns and The Royal Scions.

Conclusion

Personally I like the theme of this set. I like the fantasy feel that it provides. As for the mechanics of the set, they seem very different for normal abilities so I will really need to get my own hands on the cards to play and know for sure whether I like the set or not.
