Looking for a new fresh and fun party game to pull out at your next meetup that everyone would enjoy? Medium the card game has you covered. Today we will be reviewing Medium, a game of matching words and scoring points with your partners as you get on the same wavelength blow away the competition.
Medium is a card game that is designed for 2-8 players with the base set. The game comes with several like minded word sets that are utilized in the final deck that is played with based on the amount of players.
This keeps the game relatively short and controlled as well as makes the word pairing much easier for people to accomplish.
How Medium the Card Game Works
The goal of Medium is to find the medium word between the card placed by one player and that players partner.
Players will count down from 3 and say the word they believe best fits the medium between the words of the cards laid down for instance “road” and “tire”. If the players together say “CAR!” then they have found the medium and get points that are shared between that partnership.
If the players fail and one says, “Car” and the other says “Travel”, they will get a second attempt to guess the medium, but now it has to be between the words car and travel.
If the players in the partnership cannot get a medium after 3 attempts, the turn passes to the next pair at the table.
This is one thing that I really love about this game, the points are shared between the person on your right, and the person on your left. So there is always incentive to do good for both turns a player has.
I have found that it usually takes a game’s worth of back and forth guessing to truly start to get the feel for what words will actually work to get points and what doesn’t.
I also experience that once the group grows past 6 players, the game can take much longer despite the programed in timeframe that using only X amount of sets in the box instructs based on the amount of players.
There are 3 crystal balls in the deck, these will tell players when the game is nearing an end and once all 3 are drawn, the final round has begun.
There are also ESP cards, each player gets 2 cards that hold 2 points worth of value if not used during the game, but these cards can either allow players to hop in on the first guess of another group to steal the points if the medium is obvious. Of there is the shuffle hand, where a player discards as many of their cards as they desire and draws back to a full hand. This is useful to get rid of those rather complicated words.

You should absolutely buy Medium, this game has made our holiday 2020 list for a reason, this game is fresh, well designed, beautiful color scheme and artwork that is also minimalist. The game is super quick to learn to play and is almost a guaranteed hit at your next get together.

On top of this, there is a new expansion out for the game called Medium Second Sight! This expansion at the time right now is much harder to come by but will surely pick up steam as it gets further into it’s release as at the time of writing this article, the expansion is pretty new! It comes with new ESP cards abilities as well as some more card sets to utilize for your next game.
