If you are just getting into the game for the first time, or are even a seasoned horrible person, this guide is here to help you navigate the catalog of expansions as well as let you know some of our personal favorites. This is the Ultimate Buyers Guide to Cards Against Humanity.

Do You Need The Base Set to Player Cards Against Humanity

There are a lot of Cards Against Humanity Expansions out there and so much so that you may be asking yourself: “Do I need the Base Set to Play Cards Against Humanity?” The answer is no, as long as you have enough expansions and cards to fill out a table of friends, you can play with any amount of expansion sets. Personally, I have found that the main expansion line of boxes such as the Green Box, plus the Red box ect. will be just the right amount to have a good game with some friends.

But a general rule that we find works best for amount of cards required for a game are in the following chart:

  • 2-3 Players - 1 expansion box containing 300 cards

  • 4-5 Players - 2 expansion boxes containing 300 cards

  • 6+ Players - 3 expansion boxes

These guidelines are based off the base rules where each player has a hand of 10 white cards.

What Are The Best Cards Against Humanity Expansions?

With so many expansions out there. We have found that the three themed bundles tend to be the most fun to play with. These are the Nasty Bundle, the Nerd Bundle and the Hidden Gems Bundle. Keep in mind that these sets contain the small expansion packs all wrapped into one box.

But if you are not one for theme, the regular expansion boxes, blue, red, green, absurd, and everything boxes are also really great purchases, these are the core expansion boxes to the game. Of the four, I personally recommend the green and absurd box.

  • The 90’s Nostalgia Pack

  • the 2000’s Nostalgia Pack

  • The Retail Pack

  • The Jew Pack

It’s quite possible that after one more small pack release that these will be combined into yet another bundle, but as of right now, this is the only way to purchase these small expansion themes.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Nasty, Nerd, and Hidden Gems bundles consist of a series of individual themed packs that can be purchased separately instead of the entire bundle if you so desired.

Recently there has been an expansion to this kid friendly version of the game and the box glows in the dark.

Limited Edition Sets

Not all sets stick around forever. For instance, over the years there have been several other packs that have released such as the Hidden Pack which was done in partnership with Exploding Kittens and was literally hidden in the Target display case of the two games. If you are interested in learning about Exploding Kittens and it’s expansions check out our ranking of Exploding Kittens Expansions Here!

Other instances of cards being hidden in the past include in the Fathers Day special where they packed cards into dvd cases. This lead buyers to go into stores and search for the listed SKU of a dvd to find the hidden packs.
